WHAT ARE YOUR COMPANY'S CORE VALUES?
The Core Values
Inspiration for Making Your Company...GREAT!
Have you defined your company's core values and/or tenets?
Values stand at the very core of your brand. They’re the center from which everything radiates - including your brand’s look (design), message (voice), and relationships (customer service). Your values or tenets will truly empower you to make important decisions and intentions for your business every single day. Aligning with them will help you pursue new projects or even say no to ones that don't fit well. The important ideas is consistent integration of your values in your work day and throughout your platforms. While your list is definitely internally-facing (i.e. to you!) it also can face forward. This would reflect when a client or customer describes your business - the words/emotions should line up!
The benefit of having Core Values
A company's values represent the core pillars of their identity and principles which also affect the way they conduct their business. Every company has a unique set of core values and they support the vision and decision making processes within the organization. There are tons of benefits, of course, but one that stands out to us as small business owners is INTENTIONS. You know those days when you are disenchanted? Perhaps you have a challenging client or you just are un-inspired. This is the best time to re-read your Core Values and to remember why you started your business in the first place. #YES
So how do I do this list?
It's never too late to do this work. I definitely recommend it being part of your brand development but, if you have not defined this list, go for it now! Take time and write down 10 values. Here's a guide:
1) WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU?
For example, making time to curate my brand and business, establishing a dedicated work/life balance, etc.
2) WHAT DO YOU STAND FOR?
For example, passionate design, kind working relationship, etc.
3) MAKE AN "ANYTHING THAT COMES TO MIND" LIST FIRST
For example, just throw anything out. Anything. You will revise this list in a bit. Here are some questions to answer - from a business POV - that can guide you:
- What’s important to you?
- What sparked your business idea?
- What will help guide us when we are facing a difficult decision?
- What are the things you like about what you are doing at your business?
- What parts of our company are you proud of?
- Does your personal/life work well inside your company structure? If so, list why. If not, list what you would like.
4) READ YOUR LIST OUT LOUD & REMOVE ANY "MEH" ITEMS
For example, any item that doesn't make you really happy or really unhappy, remove. Your list can be any length but we recommend about 5 -10 bullet points.
5) USE YOUR LIST. DAILY.
For example, write down your core values and read them daily to keep your intentions and goals clear.
Important to remember
Every day, you are evolving as a person and as business owner. Life is fluid and and it ebbs and flows. Keep this in mind and be kind to yourself. This list is to help you achieve your goals. They can evolve just like you. Need to make any changes as life moves on, then do it! You got this!
